Our Story
Helping & Empowering our Neighbours (HEN) is a charity organisation in Singapore which aims to help the low-income families in Singapore. The idea was first planted in 2015 after the founder, Nilofar Iyer, returned from Pennsylvania, USA having witnessed many low income African-American families in dire straits. Stirred and also having personally faced uncertain times growing up, she then decided to raise awareness of and assist the underprivileged families in Singapore which led her to start a small volunteer group with like minded friends in March 2018.
Today, HEN is one of Singapore’s foremost independent charities that makes a tangible and meaningful contribution to fighting hunger through food rations and empowering each and every member of these families from cradle to grave.
About us
HEN (Helping and Empowering our Neighbours) was set up in March 2018 as a welfare organisation wholly run by volunteers who share the same drive and passion to help the underprivileged communities in Singapore to rise above their poverty.
We were officially registered as a society in Singapore under the Registry of Societies in Dec 2018 and have been registered as a charity in Singapore with the Charity Commissioners since March 2020.
Our Mission is to :
- Help low income families of single parent background in Singapore rise above their poverty with monetary assistance and
- Empower each and every member of the single parent family with life long skills
We would like to Transform Tomorrow Together Today!
There are more than 150,000 families in Singapore who earn less than $650 a month and they need our assistance.
Our donors and volunteers made it possible to continue helping these families throughout this year. To continue our important work in giving hope to the families, we seek your kind donations. It just takes $50 a month to buy food rations to help these families.
We are currently assisting 50 single-parent families in different parts of Singapore with monthly NTUC vouchers worth $50. Our goal is to help a 100 families by year end and for that we would need your kind donation.
